General

Monthly competitions are open only to members of the British Society of Underwater Photographers.  Those who participate are expected to observe the BSoUP and Marine Conservation Society Underwater Photographers Code of Conduct.

All images must be taken underwater except where specifically detailed otherwise.

The entrant must be the photographer.

Aquarium shots are not eligible, unless specifically allowed in a special competition.  Swimming pool shots are acceptable if the subject is in context, e.g. sport or fashion.

Images that have won or been placed in any BSoUP or non-BSoUP national or international competition cannot be re-entered in subsequent BSoUP competitions.  Regional level competitions are excluded from this ruling.  Individual images that haven’t previously won a monthly competition may be entered as part of a subsequent portfolio.  However, bear in mind that re-used images often have less impact with judges who have already seen them elsewhere.

Competition Image Requirements

Entries must be digital and in JPG format.  No other formats will be accepted.

Images size should be maximum 1400 pixels wide and 1050 pixels high at 72 pixels/inch.  The entry form will reject other sizes.

Colour profile Adobe RGB.

The competition is judged anonymously so please do not include names or watermarks anywhere on the image or in the file name or metadata.

All entries for monthly competitions must be entered using the current competition link and by the cut-off time shown on the form which is automatic, so please allow for delays in uploading images.

Guidance for Specific Competitions

Most competitions are self-explanatory by title, but the competition secretary will include a few words of guidance on the monthly competition entry form.

Copyright

For all BSoUP competitions, copyright remains with the photographer. BSoUP reserves the right to display your competition images on this website, on BSoUP’s social media pages, in BSoUP’s in-house magazine In Focus and in other publications where the subject of an article is about the competition itself, for the purposes of publicising the winners and to encourage entries in future competitions. Images will be credited to the photographer by markings on or adjacent to the image. BSoUP will not use competition images to generate revenue and any other uses will be pre-agreed with the photographers concerned.
