Once again BSoUP has teamed up with DIVER Magazine to stage this major competition at the DIVE SHOW at the NEC, Birmingham.  Only digital entries are needed.  BSoUP/DIVER Magazine will print a selection of short listed images at A3 size to display at the Dive show ready for judging.

There is a modest entry fee of £10 for BSoUP members and £15 for non-members to cover the cost of printing.

Questions about this competition should be addressed to [email protected]

There are 2 categories (Overseas and British). You may enter a maximum of 4 images, but only 2 images per category.

There is a mechanism to recognise genuine newcomers to underwater photography.  BSoUP seeks to identify and encourage new talent in underwater photography.  The spirit of the newcomer category is somebody who is genuinely new to underwater photography, not just somebody who has not won or been placed in a significant competition.

So newcomers must have been creating underwater images for only the THREE YEARS prior to the competition date.

Additionally, newcomers must not have taken an underwater image that was placed first, second or third or received an honourable mention in any national, international or other significant on-line or print competition.

If in doubt, competitors should declare competition results and experience to the Competition secretary ([email protected]) and ask for a ruling before submitting entry forms.

The public will vote for a winner in each of the two categories and each winner will receive a trophy.
The best newcomer will receive a trophy.
The best of show will be selected by an independent panel of judges and receive the overall winner’s trophy.

Images entered must not have come first, second or third in a national or international competition, such as BSoUP’s Open Portfolio, BSoUP’s Beginners’ Portfolio, BSoUP’s BIUPC, St Abbs Splash-In, SAC Travel Club, U/W Photographer of the Year, Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Marine Conservation Society etc.

Entries may be portrait or landscape format. They will be printed within the overall space of an A3-size print that includes a border and caption.  Therefore please make your image fit within an overall window of 420mm x 297mm.  This equates to 4724 x 3508 pixels at 300dpi and an approximate aspect ratio of 4:3.  Other aspect ratios will fit inside with an aspect ratio of 3:2 producing the optimum space for a small border and caption (see illustrations below). Maximum file size is 4MB.

For all BSoUP competitions, copyright remains with the photographer. BSoUP and DIVER Magazine reserve the right to display your competition images on this website, on BSoUP’s social media pages, in BSoUP’s in-house magazine In Focus, in DIVER Magazine and in other publications where the subject of an article is about the competition itself, for the purposes of publicising the winners and to encourage entries in future competitions. Images will be credited to the photographer by markings on or adjacent to the image. BSoUP will not use competition images to generate revenue and any other uses will be pre-agreed with the photographers concerned.

The awards will be announced live at the BSoUP on line meeting after the event, to which entrants will be invited.  BSoUP will also publish the winners on its Facebook page.
